After I moved in,<br \/>\nI forgot which furniture was mine &amp; which<br \/>\njust appeared like your book of poems<br \/>\nabout North Dakota, that book of nightmares<br \/>\nby Kinnell. Why is there an <em>h<\/em> in your name<br \/>\nif you don\u2019t say it aloud? You\u2019d better come along too.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve already packed your chickens, your pen,<br \/>\nthat Beastie Boys album you keep playing.<br \/>\nWe\u2019ll ask along the way about a record player.<br \/>\nI hope you don\u2019t mind the mallards<br \/>\non your lap&#8211;they torment the chickens.<br \/>\nI brought my pen too. We\u2019ll reclaim your nightmares,<br \/>\nthat North Dakotan gale, those tasseling soul<br \/>\nshreds caught like erasure shavings<br \/>\nalong each peak between Mt. Spokane &amp; White Butte,<br \/>\n&amp; when we fail we\u2019ll head south like conquerors.<br \/>\nNo one will know: you the Poet Laureate<br \/>\nof Spokane, me the Poet Laureate<br \/>\nof my grandparents\u2019 house&#8211;this isn\u2019t escape,<br \/>\nit\u2019s waste management. Leave your phone next to mine.<br \/>\nWe have six birds, two pens, &amp; 10,000 diners<br \/>\nfull of napkins between us &amp; Mississippian lemonade.<br \/>\nWe\u2019ll call it redemption.
