Why we were<br \/>\nusing cloth instead of paper, I can&#8217;t say, you<br \/>\nwere the one who went in there afterward,<br \/>\nthen returned to swipe gently at my back,<br \/>\nmy shoulders, my belly. Those are the places<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ve been. Those are the places wiped<br \/>\nclean of you. It was a practical decision:<br \/>\ncleaning the bathroom, doing the laundry.<br \/>\nBut I can&#8217;t yet heave the bed back into<br \/>\nthe corner where it belongs, when it had been<br \/>\nhauled so wildly, helplessly across<br \/>\nthe floor by our bodies. <em>You&#8217;re so little<\/em>, you<br \/>\nsaid, your entire wingspan wrapped around<br \/>\nmy torso, hands crossed over my ribs, tilting<br \/>\nus both forward. The sheets stained with blue-<br \/>\nberries, all the clothes we discarded without<br \/>\nthought, gathered in deposits along the edge. I<br \/>\nthrew some of them back at you when you were<br \/>\ngoing.
