Somewhere else<br \/>\na man chases her image with a can<br \/>\nof orange spray paint. Evening has already<br \/>\nhappened. He shades the almost-<br \/>\ntouching, half-formed hands of Matisse&#8217;s dancers<br \/>\nonto the side of the train, and her light<br \/>\nis different now, though he knows this is not possible,<br \/>\nnot really. Light does not change, just gets lost<br \/>\ninside the greater thing. And if he could go back<br \/>\nit wouldn&#8217;t be to the hospital<br \/>\nwhere the sun forked through the space<br \/>\nhis body left as he turned out of the room,<br \/>\nor the first kiss, but farther still, to the moment<br \/>\njust before, looking out at the pond in muzzled<br \/>\nautumn, the fish curving on the cusp<br \/>\nof emergency, all those rivers mapped inside them.<br \/>\nAnd they&#8217;d watch quietly until sundown, because he doesn&#8217;t<br \/>\ndo this work for forgiveness, but because the fact<br \/>\nof grace disgusts him.<\/p>\n<p>He knows this much:<br \/>\nIt was winter. Her hair was thinning.
