{"id":12172,"date":"2015-07-31T14:28:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T20:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=12172"},"modified":"2015-07-31T22:44:41","modified_gmt":"2015-08-01T04:44:41","slug":"domesticity-a-gothic-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/12172","title":{"rendered":"Domesticity, Gothic Perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a wooden cottage<br \/>\non a distant mountain<br \/>\nat the point where the world rolls<br \/>\ninto the unknown,<\/p>\n<p>a mongrel sprawls by the fire<br \/>\nand a dour girl, humming,<br \/>\nmends her brown stocking.<br \/>\nA woman, neglecting her kettle,<\/p>\n<p>must go to the window to listen&#8211;<br \/>\nas if straining to hear her own heart&#8211;<br \/>\nfor the faintest rustle of the saints&#8217;<br \/>\ndrapery, lifeblood staining drop by drop<\/p>\n<p>an otherwise ordinary earth.<br \/>\nShe believes she can almost<br \/>\nsee this scene&#8211;luminous blue, gold, red glowing<br \/>\nas far as the field&#8217;s rough edge.<\/p>\n<p>Her husband whispers her name<br \/>\nfrom his workbench,<br \/>\nsawdust in his beard<br \/>\nand three teeth missing.<\/p>\n<p>Once, in secret, he journeyed miles<br \/>\nto the city&#8217;s shining gates<br \/>\nto beg forgiveness<br \/>\nfor he knew not what.<\/p>\n<p>He could never bear to tell her<br \/>\nit was just the beautiful people of the valley<br \/>\nreenacting the Crucifixion yet again.<br \/>\nHe understands.
