I&#8217;ve tried to ignore him<br \/>\nfrom behind my note pad,<br \/>\nbut in the morning, barely able<br \/>\nto stand, I demand he tells me<br \/>\nhow he takes his eggs.<br \/>\nHe doesn&#8217;t move.<\/p>\n<p>I pour a pot of hot coffee<br \/>\nstraight into his lap. I start chanting<br \/>\nmy college fight song<br \/>\nand pawing down all the blinds.<br \/>\nI press a butter knife<br \/>\nto my throat, throw an order of hash<br \/>\nagainst the wall. Once and for all<br \/>\nI prove I&#8217;m unemployable. <\/p>\n<p>When it becomes clear<br \/>\nhe won&#8217;t be convinced,<br \/>\nI pull the net from my tangled hair<br \/>\nand shuffle, slouched, into the farthest<br \/>\ncorner in the place. I hide my face<br \/>\nbehind a glossy menu. I close my eyes<br \/>\nand in no time I&#8217;m alone.<br \/>\nI hear people come, and people go.<br \/>\nFrom time to time, I glance<br \/>\nout the window, toward the traffic<br \/>\nbuzzing by, hoping my waitress<br \/>\nmight visit my table soon. Sometimes,<br \/>\nI sense I&#8217;m being spoken to<br \/>\nor scolded, while other times<br \/>\nI hear a woman crying, a car door<br \/>\nclicking open, then slamming shut,<br \/>\na motorcycle revving alive,<br \/>\nthen veering into traffic, but it seems<br \/>\nlittle ever truly changes, and I&#8217;ve been<br \/>\nwaiting here, with the rest of you,<br \/>\nhungry for years. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/12077\"><\/p>\n<h6>Justin Boening<\/h6>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a man that&#8217;s been waiting in that red vinyl booth for days.
