OVERVIEW
The Department of Mathematics at Vanderbilt is a recognized world leader in mathematical research and education. Our faculty comprises several ICM (International Congress of Mathematicians) speakers, and Fields Medalist Vaughan Jones has been affiliated with our department since 2011. About a third of our faculty are Fellows of the AMS.
Two top-notch research centers are located in the Vanderbilt mathematics department: the Center for Constructive Approximation and the Center for Noncommutative Geometry and Operator Algebras (NCGOA). About a dozen mathematicians, from graduate students to senior researchers, are affiliated with each center. Activities of the centers include undergraduate and graduate courses, weekly seminars, research conferences, and workshops.
Moreover, the department has leading research groups in several other areas of mathematics including biomathematics, combinatorics, geometry & topology, group theory, PDE’s, universal algebra & logic, and harmonic analysis. The research achievements of Vanderbilt mathematics faculty have been recognized by invitations to speak at prestigious mathematics conferences such as the International Congress of Mathematicians and the AMS-MAA Mathematical Meetings.
The department has been highly successful in recruiting outstanding talent from throughout the country and the world including faculty, postdoctoral research fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students. Our postdoctoral program is particularly impressive, with about 15 postdocs in residence every year. Our postdocs and graduate students have been thriving in their subsequent careers.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS FUNDS
The Department of Mathematics Endowment is an unrestricted fund to support the department’s research and teaching mission. It was established to fund workshops, colloquia, lecture series by international speakers, and other research related activities. It can also be used to forge stronger social ties between the different groups within the department.
The Department of Mathematics Gift Fund is an unrestricted fund to support various activities of the department such as the Undergraduate Seminar. It also provides help with social events related to retirements and yearly student awards ceremonies.
The Samir Aldroubi and Amira Azhari Prize for Excellence in Postdoctoral Research Fund provides a cash award every two years to recognize the research achievements of current and recent postdoctoral fellows in the department. It was established by Mathematics Professor Akram Aldroubi in honor of his parents, Samir Aldroubi and Amira Azhari.
The Richard F. Arenstorf Scholarship Fund provides a scholarship to a select group of primarily incoming graduate students each year to offset educational expenses. It was established with an endowment from the late Richard Arenstorf, a professor of mathematics at Vanderbilt University from 1969 to 1997.
The B. F. Bryant Prize for Excellence in Teaching Fund provides a cash award annually to a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics. The B.F. Bryant award was established in 1987 in honor of Billy F. Bryant, Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus, who taught at Vanderbilt from 1948 to 1986. The award is given each spring to a graduate teaching assistant who has demonstrated concern for and accomplishments in teaching – qualities that characterized the career of Professor Bryant.
The Bjarni J?nsson Prize for Research Fund provides a cash award each year to a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics for exceptional research in mathematics, as well as for outstanding research potential. The Bjarni J?nsson Prize was established in honor of Bjarni J?nsson, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus, who taught at Vanderbilt from 1966 to 1992.
The Richard J. Larsen Award for Achievement in Undergraduate Mathematics provides a cash prize each spring to the senior math major judged by the faculty to have excelled in all aspects of undergraduate mathematics. The Larsen Award was established in honor of Richard Larsen, who was a member of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics from 1970 to 2005.
The Shanks Endowment supports the annual Shanks Lecture and Conference (click here to see a list of past Shanks lectures and conferences). It was established by the Shanks family to honor the late Baylis and Olivia Shanks. Baylis Shanks served as chairman of the Department of Mathematics from 1956 to 1969.
