Shanks Workshop on Combinatorics and Graph Theory

October 7, 2023 – On March 9-10, 2024, the Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics will host the Shanks Workshop on Combinatorics and Graph Theory. The workshop will bring together young researchers from different institutions and backgrounds to discuss recent developments on structural graph theory, extremal combinatorics, and graph colorings.

October 4, 2023 – Chair of Mathematics, Dan Margalit is co-organizing a variety show with Nancy Scherich, winner of the 2017 Dance Your Ph.D. competition.  The show is called Mathematics: A Quick Revue, and it will be held on January 5, 2024 in conjunction with the 2024 Joint Mathematics Meetings.  The performance will take place at the Alcazar Theater...

New Department Leadership

August 23, 2023 – Dan Margalit has joined the Vanderbilt faculty as Stevenson Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics. Margalit is a leading expert on low-dimensional topology and geometric group theory. A brief video introducing Professor Margalit and some other new A&S faculty is available here. Stevenson Chair Promotions

August 11, 2023 – Professors Akram Aldroubi and Jared Speck were appointed as Stevenson Chairs. Aldroubi is a leading expert in sampling theory, harmonic analysis, and their applications to signal and image processing. Speck is a leading expert on the mathematics of general relativity and shock waves.

Distinguished Professor Promotion

August 11, 2023 – Ed Saff was appointed as a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics. Professor Saff is Director of the Center for Constructive Approximation which publishes the journal Constructive Approximation (Springer Nature).  He has authored 25 books and almost 300 papers in approximation theory, potential theory, complex analysis, and numerical analysis.  

University Award

June 7, 2023 – Marcelo Disconzi, Associate Professor of Mathematics, was awarded a Chancellor Faculty Fellowship. In his recent work, he has developed a new mathematical formalism that bridges the long-standing divide between the laws of thermodynamics and Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Fellow

May 2, 2023 – John Rafter, a Principal Senior Lecturer in the Vanderbilt Math Department, has been chosen as a Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Fellow. The award is given annually to faculty who exhibit excellence in teaching effectiveness, imaginative and innovative teaching practices inside and outside the classroom, and for extraordinary contributions in designing and advising undergraduate Immersion experiences.
