The overall goal of this publication is to provide a venue for STEM professionals and educators to publish results from their work that will be of general interest to those who develop, implement, and conduct research\u00a0in the field of STEM Outreach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fees:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research articles: $1000<\/li>\n<li>Programmatic articles: $1000<\/li>\n<li>Case studies: $1000<\/li>\n<li>Commentaries: $250<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Note: no submission fee is required.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Types of Papers Accepted:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Research studies:\u00a0<\/strong>This section of the journal\u00a0is reserved\u00a0for researchers who have conducted formal, in-depth research and obtained substantial qualitative or quantitative data to evaluate the impact or effectiveness of a program, relationship, event, etc.\u202fThese manuscripts will be in the range of 30,000-60,000 characters with spaces or approximately 5-10 journal pages (excluding tables, figures, supplementary material, etc.).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Program descriptions:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0These manuscripts are reports of\u202fstudies that have not yet conducted formal, in-depth analyses\u00a0of a\u00a0program, but the authors believe that their work exhibits innovative educational practices that are of value to others who may wish to replicate all or parts of the program. The authors will present sufficient preliminary evaluation data to demonstrate the feasibility for and value of replication of the program.\u202fThese manuscripts will be in the range of 30,000-60,000 characters with spaces or approximately 5-10 journal pages (excluding tables, figures,\u00a0supplementary\u00a0material).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Case studies:<\/strong>\u00a0Case studies provide a detailed description of a particular event, program, relationship, or partnership that may provide valuable insight and data for those in the field who are conducting similar studies or those seeking information on similar programs.\u202fThese manuscripts will be in the range of 30,000-60,000 characters with spaces or approximately 5-10 journal pages (excluding tables, figures,\u00a0supplementary\u00a0material).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commentaries\/Editorials:<\/strong>\u00a0A limited number of commentaries\u00a0will be accepted\u00a0on topics of particular relevance to current issues. These will generally be in the range of 1-3 journal pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Deadlines and Publishing Dates<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Manuscripts\u00a0must\u00a0be submitted\u00a0by September 30, 2017 for publication in the January 15, 2018 issue. Manuscripts for future\u00a0issues\u00a0will be accepted\u00a0on a rolling\u00a0basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>SUBMISSION GUIDELINES<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>General guidelines<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>JSO\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0peer-reviewed,\u00a0open access journal. This format allows for rapid publication and open access to researchers across the world.<\/li>\n<li>The initial submission requires\u00a0the\u00a0manuscript, cover letter, figures and tables, and supporting information.\u00a0Authors\u00a0may submit\u00a0the manuscript\u00a0in either\u00a0Word or\u00a0.rtf\u00a0format.\u00a0More detailed instructions\u00a0are provided below.<\/li>\n<li>All manuscripts must adhere to\u00a0APA style, except where\u00a0indicated.<\/li>\n<li>Manuscripts\u00a0submitted to JSO must contain original material. The manuscript\u00a0must not be published or submitted to another journal while under review by JSO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0Manuscript organization<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Manuscripts\u00a0should be submitted\u00a0in .doc, .docx,\u00a0or .rtf format. Pages\u00a0should be numbered\u00a0in the upper right corner, with the title page as page 1.\u00a0All text should be\u00a0double-spaced, with\u00a0one-inch\u00a0margins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cover letter<\/strong>:\u00a0The cover letter should include the statement that the manuscript has not been and\u00a0will not be submitted\u00a0to another journal while under review by JSO. The author should also indicate a statement as to why this manuscript is appropriate for the JSO, and the type of article being submitted (i.e. research, programmatic, case study). Authors are encouraged to suggest potential reviewers, and should indicate individuals in the field who\u00a0should not be considered\u00a0as reviewers if there is a potential conflict of interest.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Title page<\/strong>:\u00a0The title page should contain\u00a0authors names and affiliations,\u00a0a\u00a0descriptive title, corresponding author information,\u00a0and a running title (no more than 50\u00a0characters\u00a0with spaces),\u00a0and\u00a0key words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Abstract<\/strong>:\u00a0Page 2\u00a0will be the abstract, summarizing major points in the manuscript. The abstract should be\u00a0200 words or less.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manuscript text<\/strong>: The text of the paper will begin on\u00a0page 3, and\u00a0will\u00a0follow APA guidelines for formatting headings and subheadings. See for example:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/apastyle\/?gclid=CjwKCAjwzMbLBRBzEiwAfFz4gWmGpSYclyhtS-40rS6N9Ya0FdD_lNEyskJw-pdc45fcCdojLy6dghoCZpoQAvD_BwE\">http:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/apastyle\/?gclid=CjwKCAjwzMbLBRBzEiwAfFz4gWmGpSYclyhtS-40rS6N9Ya0FdD_lNEyskJw-pdc45fcCdojLy6dghoCZpoQAvD_BwE<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The text for most submissions should include an introduction (page 3), methods, results, discussion, and references. Other formats may be more appropriate for some manuscripts,\u00a0such as\u00a0program descriptions and\u00a0case studies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Acknowledgements<\/strong>:\u00a0Acknowledgements should be included on a separate page just before references\u00a0and after the manuscript text, and should include the funding source and any other sources of support for the study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>References:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>In-text references should be in the following format: if two authors, list\u00a0last names\u00a0of both authors, followed by the date (<em>Author1 and\u00a0Author 2, date<\/em>). For more than two authors, the format should be (<em>Author1, et al., date<\/em>). If there\u00a0is more than one reference for a specific section, put all within the same parentheses, separated\u00a0by a semicolon.<\/li>\n<li>References\u00a0Cited:\u00a0This section should follow immediately after the end of the text. Citations will follow modified APA guidelines, and\u00a0be listed\u00a0in alphabetical order. (2014).\u202fAmerican housing survey: 2013 detailed tables.\u202fRetrieved from\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2014\/cb14-tps78.html\">http:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2014\/cb14-tps78.html<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Figures and Tables:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Figures should not be included in the manuscript text, but included either as separate files (figures) or at the end of the document (tables)\u00a0after the References Cited section.<\/li>\n<li>Figures\u00a0should be uploaded\u00a0as individual files in .jpg or .tif\u00a0format.<\/li>\n<li>Captions for figures\u00a0should be listed\u00a0at the end of the document after the References Cited section.<\/li>\n<li>Tables should be included at the end of the document after the Figure captions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>MANUSCRIPT REVIEW PROCESS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>All manuscripts submitted for publication in\u00a0JSO are peer-reviewed in a single-blind manner (i.e. reviewers remain anonymous; authors are known to the reviewers). All manuscripts\u00a0will be reviewed\u00a0by a minimum of two external reviewers selected by the Editors in consultation with the Editorial Board.<\/li>\n<li>The Editor-in-Chief will conduct a preliminary review,\u00a0and\u00a0send out to the reviewers who will have 14 days to complete their review and return comments to the Editors. The Editor will then prepare a decision letter based on the reviewers\u2019 comments, and send to the corresponding author with the decision to:<\/li>\n<li>Accept with minor or no revisions<\/li>\n<li>Accept with major revisions<\/li>\n<li>Reject<\/li>\n<li>If accepted with revisions,\u00a0authors will\u00a0have 45 days to\u00a0provide the additional material and editing, and resubmit for publication through the online portal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>POLICIES\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Journal of STEM Outreach applies the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike\u00a04.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) to all published manuscripts and texts. By submitting your work to our journal, you give consent to have the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license applied to your work.
