Catalog Description: The Ottoman “long nineteenth century,” 1789 to 1923. The Reforms (Tanzimat), state patriotism, intercommunal relations, national “awakenings,” and the emergence of a public sphere. Historiographical issues, such as perceptions of the empire as the “Sick Man of Europe” and debates over its decline.
