At A Glance

The Killam Fellowships Program, administered by Fulbright Canada, provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada.

The Killam Fellowships Program offers a cash award of $5,000 US per semester($10,000 for the full year), along with an allowance of CN$500 to offset health insurance costs. The Foundation hosts all new Killam Fellows at an Orientation program in Ottawa each fall and again at a seminar in Washington D.C. each spring. In addition, all Fellows are eligible to apply for a mobility grant. The idea of the mobility initiative is to allow students to undertake an educational field trip, providing the Fellows with the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the culture of the host country.

When Can I Study?

You can choose to attend in the Fall semester, the Spring semester, or both (i.e., a full academic year's study). It is important to note that you will be applying at least a year in advance!

Fall Orientation and Spring Seminar

Each September, with the support of the United States Department of State, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and the American Killam Trusts, the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America hosts the incoming cohort of American Fulbright Scholars and the entire incoming class of Killam Fellows. Orientation, which is designed to provide an introduction to Canada and an opportunity to meet with management and staff at the Foundation, is critical to the overall exchange experience. The Foundation covers all reasonable costs associated with the orientation.

The Killam Fellowships Spring Seminar is a series of academic and cultural events which is offered to all Killam Fellows each April. The seminar takes place in Washington, D.C., allowing the Killam Fellows to experience the best of both national capitals. The Killam Fellowships Spring Seminar offers the opportunity to meet with senior representatives from the Canadian Embassy in Washington, the US Government, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The seminar also provides the opportunity to visit major landmarks in Washington. Previous participants have visited Capitol Hill, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Newseum, the OAS, the Museum of the American Indian, and the White House. The Foundation covers all reasonable costs associated with the Spring Seminar.
