Due to restructuring within Vanderbilt’s Graduate School, French is not accepting applications during AY 2023-2024.

General Admissions Overview

High proficiency in reading, writing and speaking of French and English is expected as well as general knowledge of literary theory and the literature, culture, and history of the French speaking world. The department invites applications from students whose academic background promises great potential for scholarly achievement in the future. In addition to The Graduate School’s requirements prospective students must also prepare to submit the following documents:

  • Statement of Academic Purpose
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Writing samples (one in English and one in French)
  • Transcripts for all secondary institutions attended
  • GRE scores


Special Admission Requirements: All international students whose native language is not English and whose undergraduate degree is from an institution in a country whose official language is not English must submit scores of the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS.
