Demystifying the PTRC and the Tenure Process: A Discussion with Former PTRC Members

The University Promotion and Tenure Review Committee (“PTRC”) reviews school/college deans’ recommendations in favor of tenure or promotion for all candidates in A&S, Divinity, Engineering, Law, Nursing, Owen, and Peabody. The PTRC is charged with deciding whether the proper procedures have been followed and whether the candidate has satisfied the University’s tenure or promotion standards. Former PTRC members will offer insights and answer questions about the process based on their experiences. This panel will discuss tenure. This session is open only to pre-tenure faculty. Supporting Effective Teaching in a Department

How can academic leaders support a department or school’s teaching mission? In this session led by staff from the Vanderbilt Center for Teaching, participants will consider the ways that faculty members can refine their teaching skills over time as part of their ongoing professional development. Participants will also explore structures and resources that can be employed at the department or school level to foster teaching development in the service of greater student learning and student success. Navigating Life & Professional Paths as a Scholar

Designed for junior faculty, this session will feature a panel of tenured full professors as they share their experiences of tenure and promotion – offering insight into the challenges, obstacles, and successes along this path. This will include a conversation on how to maintain a successful scholarly approach amid all the responsibilities and requests for faculty time and the emotional labor required to achieve set goals. Leading without Power (Leadership Development)

The central question confronting an academic leader is how to lead a center, a unit, a department, a school, or a university when you don’t have power over your workforce.  This session, which borrows heavily from multiple overlapping research literatures and nearly two decades of leadership experience, will tackle this provocative question.

This lunch workshop will discuss strategies to maximize the effectiveness of faculty searches. The conversation will give special emphasis to best practices when using Interfolio Faculty Search as well as focus on the impact of bias on the search process. Lunch is provided. This session is open to faculty currently serving on faculty search committees and is optional for those that have served in the past. Register here.

The Office of Inclusive Excellence is hosting a series of Faculty Writing Sessions. The sessions are part of a community-building initiative to offer a space where colleagues can enter into freely, dedicate personal time towards scholarship, and build a peer network across campus that can have a great impact on faculty engagement over time. Faculty are invited to use this time as motivation to work on personal projects that may be at any phase.  The format includes time for light breakfast/networking and a short welcoming message before dedicated writing time (the main focus of these sessions).
