Book Club 10/17

Posted by on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 in DOS News.

Greetings and happy fall semester!  I am writing to invite you to participate in a “book club” with the Higher Education Administration (HEA) professional students who are taking the Practice of Student Affairs class.  There are currently a number of great books that address issues facing higher education and the broader community.  Sometimes we read (or want to read) a book and wish we could discuss the content with others in relation to our work.  This is your opportunity to do so!

The students chose from the following books; more detailed information on each is attached:

  • Hamilton, L.T. (2016). Parenting to a degree: How family matters for college women’s success. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press.
  • Hephner LaBanc, B., & Hemphill, B.O. (Eds.). (2015). College in the crosshairs: An administrative perspective on prevention of gun violence. Sterling, VA: Stylus.
  • Junco, R. (2014). Engaging students through social media: Evidence-based practices for student affairs. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass.
  • Palmer, P.J. (2014). Healing the heart of democracy: The courage to create a politics worthy of the human spirit. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass.
  • Pope, R.L., Reynolds, A.L., & Mueller, J.A. (2014). Creating multicultural change on campus. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass.

I invite you to select one of these books to read and join us on Monday, November 12 from 5 – 6:30 pm for a discussion facilitated by the students.  You will also have an opportunity to hear about the other books’ key points as well.

I will reach out as November 12 gets closer to confirm who is planning to participate in order to ensure we are in a large enough space.  If you have questions about this opportunity to engage with the Higher Education Administration students in a different way, please email me, Brenda.l.mckenzie@vanderbilt.edu, or call 615-875-8820.  Please feel free to share with others you think might be interested.

I hope you will consider participating.  Good luck with the remainder of the semester!
