Szklaruk and Schroeder Phone Photography Workshop

Posted by on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 in .

This year’s Curb Scholar theme of “Drawing On Our Strengths” means encouraging the scholars to utilize all the resources at their disposal, even other Curb Scholars. This week, in preparation for their trip to New Orleans, Brent Szklaruk and Jacob Schroeder, led the group in a photography workshop where they discussed some of the fundamentals of photo making. Brent and Jacob offered tips on staging, lighting, the importance of perspective, shutter speed, and what apps they recommended for editing (Yamera, 1967, RollWorld.) In the interactive portion of the workshop, the scholars were instructed to move about the room practicing the techniques they used with their smartphones. The person who took the “best” photo was to be awarded a prize by Brent and Jacob. We closed out the session with two writing prompts one engaging with cultural representations of New Orleans’ mysticism, and a storytelling exercise, where the scholars generated two fictions about themselves, and one truth, and then the group attempted to tell fact from fiction.
