Review and Reflect: Fall Break trip to New Orleans

Posted by on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 in .

After taking a week off for some Spooky Season festivities, the Curb Scholars were back to work this Monday, discussing their 4-day field trip to The Big Easy. We asked each of the scholars to share their impressions of the city, including what stood out, surprised, delighted, or challenged their expectations. Their reactions were diverse. For some, our visit to the historic Preservation Hall, was the highlight of the trip, while others mentioned touring Luis Colmenares’ metal shop and Josephine Sacabo’s photography studio. For others, our Jax Brewery river-side New Orleans School of Cooking dinner, featuring étouffée, gumbo, jambalaya and Banana’s Foster made table-side was the show-stopping event. While grateful for the opportunity to spend time with leaders in the arts and individuals helming New Orleans’ redevelopment, many of the scholars noted the missed opportunity to hear from the communities most affected by new growth post-Katrina. In their responses, the scholars provided thoughtful, honest feedback which will be invaluable as we begin to plan their next trip to the Memphis/Mississippi Delta Region during the Fall 2020 semester.
