Drawing In Pen & Ink
They say the grass is always greener on the other side, and when it comes to admiring works of art, the verdant pastures of the visual arts have always left me tinged with envy. But this week during our Curb Scholar meeting, I got to live my illustrator fantasy as Blake Gore led the scholars in a workshop: Drawing In Pen & Ink. Blake discussed the fundamentals of drawing, detailing various types of tools, strokes, shades, and perspectives. We discussed the benefits of working within constraints, how faithfully applying the basics can help anyone improve as an artist and the importance of playing to one’s strengths in any art form. Blake also directed the scholars to compete in a perspective exercise cribbed from Leonardo Da Vinci where each attempted to guess the length of a strip of paper, tapped at a distance, by tearing their strips to match. While a handful of contenders came close in their estimates, only Mariyam Shamshidova took home the grand prize of an original Blake Gore illustration.
