Kate Schaller: The Art of Medicine
The “Art of Medicine” photography project was created as a way to approach a question: what role does art play in the healthcare setting, and how do art and medicine interact with one another? The project is comprised of a series of photographs of four sculptures found on Vanderbilt’s medical campus. Paired with the photographs are quotes from individuals who work in the medical center. The individuals were asked to react to the sculptures, and the answers show that, while some give the artworks a good deal of consideration, others barely interact with the sculptures. Although this project was only a first look at the interactions between art and medicine, it can lead to more in-depth conversations about how art can function in the healthcare setting, and the effect it has on medical professionals and patients.
