The J. Peterman Company Catalog Reimagined

Student: Allyson Nesmith
Faculty: Elizabeth Meadows
Course: ENGL 1210W-06 Future Bodies: Controlling Reproduction in Dystopic Fiction

Description

In this project I recreated the J. Peterman Company catalog website but replaced the luxurious descriptions for clothing items with descriptions of the sweatshops where many of our clothes actually come from. For my clothing items I chose various celebrity outfits from the Met Gala in 2016. The purpose of this project was to raise awareness to the continued existence of sweatshops.

What knowledge or skills did you learn?

I learned so much about sweatshops and the dangers of them as well as the prevalence of them today! They still exist even throughout the United States and it is an issue that needs more awareness. Sweatshops are inhumane, dangerous, and hazardous to dozens and dozens of people.

What made this project interesting for you?

I chose the Met Gala specifically because I enjoy watching it on TV every year and I love marveling at my favorite celebrities and their lavish outfits. With that being said, I had heard a rumor once before about a popular clothing company (Charlotte Russe) still using sweatshops and combining these two ideas definitely made the project interesting to me.
