College of Arts and Science faculty recognized with 2025 teaching, advising awards

A photo of the 2025 teaching and advising winners.In the College of Arts and Science, teaching is a critical part of our mission, with our faculty at the heart of our school. Each year, we recognize our faculty for their dedication to not only teaching, but also for their mentorship and guidance.

During the first faculty meeting of the spring semester, eight faculty members were recognized for their excellence in teaching and advising within the A&S community.

The recipients of the 2025 teaching awards are:

  • Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Humanities – Scott Aikin (Philosophy)
  • Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences – Alexandre Frenette (Sociology)
  • Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Natural Sciences – Kalman Varga (Physics)
  • Harriet S. Gilliam Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Humanities – Angus Galloway (Art)
  • Harriet S. Gilliam Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences – Laurie Woods (Sociology)
  • Harriet S. Gilliam Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Natural Sciences – Brian Bill (Biological Sciences)

The recipients of the 2025 advising awards are:

  • Earnest A. Jones Faculty Adviser Award in the Humanities – Dan Solomon (Classical & Mediterranean Studies)
  • Earnest A. Jones Faculty Adviser Award in the Social Sciences – Laurie Woods (Sociology)
  • Earnest A. Jones Faculty Adviser Award in the Natural Sciences – Keri Tallman (Chemistry)
