How does a mathematician cut a bagel? What is the geometry of bubbles? These are some of the questions Vanderbilt faculty members ask students as part of the Nashville Math Circle.

The Math Circle provides Nashville-area students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to learn creative math problem-solving skills in a friendly, fun environment from leading Vanderbilt faculty. Students will build their math skills through activities such code-breaking, cryptography, and other engaging lessons. There is no cost to join the program. (Please note that the Math Circle is not a homework help session.)

Registration for fall 2025 is now open. The Math Circle meets on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the fall (Sept. 9, Sept. 23, Oct. 7, Oct. 21, Nov. 4, and Nov. 18). New participants are welcome to join at any time. The sessions are independent, so students can join at any point throughout the semester.

Math Circle instructors include co-directors Larry Rolen, assistant professor of mathematics, and Alice Mark, assistant professor of the practice in mathematics, as well as other Vanderbilt faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Members of the Vanderbilt community are encouraged to spread the word about this innovative program to 7th- through 12th-graders and their parents in the Nashville metro area.
